One of the best ways for you to avoid getting cavities and gum disease is to use good preventive dental practices. This means coming to see us twice a year for a thorough dental exam and a professional cleaning which removes mineral deposits on your teeth that home brushing can’t remove. This lets us find and treat any tooth decay or other problems right away, before they become larger, more expensive problems. At home, you can brush your teeth regularly and floss. And while it takes a lot of willpower, limiting your intake of snacks and foods which have a lot of sugar in them, especially soda, goes a long way towards maintaining your oral health.
Tooth decay does not heal. When you have a cavity, the decayed tooth material must be removed and replaced with a filling. We match the filling material to the color of your natural teeth. Your fillings will be virtually invisible, unlike the metal fillings which used to be your only choice.
Your gums should not bleed after you brush or floss. Bleeding gums are an indication of gum disease. In the early stages, we can easily treat gum disease by professionally cleaning your teeth. You continue the treatment at home with regular brushing and flossing. For more advanced gum disease, you may need a deep cleaning which removes mineral buildup (called tartar) which has formed below the gum line.
Cavities start out small, but if you don’t get them fixed, they continue to grow until you have a serious tooth decay problem. When you have a cavity so large that it weakens the tooth structure, you need a porcelain crown to repair the tooth. The crown acts like a cap which covers your tooth, giving you a new, strong tooth that will last for years.
We place a dental bridge which is a device made up of two crowns and one or more artificial teeth. It is used to replace missing teeth. The bridge is attached to the adjacent natural teeth by clasps and can be removed to clean it. Crowns and bridges are color-matched to look like your natural teeth.
Missing teeth can be another option to be replaced with dental implants. Here is how the implant procedure works: a titanium post is placed in your jawbone and a replacement tooth is attached to the post. Your replacement tooth stays firmly in place, and looks, feels and functions just like your natural teeth.
Full dentures provide you with a complete new set of replacement teeth while a partial denture is used to replace just a few missing teeth. With dentures, you’ll be able to chew your food properly and benefit from the nutrients you need, speak clearly and smile with confidence.
